Reboot

This is a reboot of BS-X Project, now renamed “Project Satellaview.”

Back then, my goal was to reproduce the Satellaview service in some form. While I’m not fully satisfied of the results, I felt something else should be done instead.

Refocus

Project Satellaview will instead focus on what we have preserved, and how to make them more accessible. Many things have been done by fans, but on a personal level, some of it don’t reach my own criterias, and so, here’s the gold rules that I want to set:

  • Modifications should be in support of the original experience, not transformative.
  • No compromises on the (re)creation of assets, such as graphics, animations, sounds, code.
  • All modifications should be open source in service of long term preservation.

The first rule is simple: Some hacks change the original experience into a new one, I think of Zelda Third Quest and Fourth Quest for example, where the experience has been reshaped into one that works better for a regular game than just the Satellaview experience. I have no problems with these myself, but way too many people treat these as how it was, and generally ignoring what the original experience was actually like.
This website may still host projects like that, but with a clear distinction to the best of my ability. The goal is to ease access to these games as they were.

The second rule may be less obvious, but frankly, some projects’ quality control feel under my own standards. I’m not here to cause tensions, but really I don’t enjoy how BS Zelda MSU1 hack resorted to a FMV to show the introduction of the game, or even a slideshow. I want complete experiences that fill in assets while also not doing any modifications to the original data, meaning we should build around what we have, and not change the original data itself just because it’s easier, at least for the original japanese language experience.
I want to make versions of the game that work standalone (which will require modifications to the original data of course), but also I’d want versions that works on the Satellaview service. I consider that removing the BS-X aspect is fine, but that we should not ignore it. What particularly gets me though is that a lot of work tend to be in benefit of the english speaking population. I’d like to also focus on the japanese speaking population too.

The third rule is simple on why I call for that: A lot of work has been done, but improving the work that’s already done can also seem particularly harder than it should. There isn’t really anyone at fault, some of the restorations were done using way less advanced tools, but the good enough mentality can only get us so far.

Emulators

I have also redone the pages in relation to Satellaview emulation in general, focusing on every way possible including the FX Pak Pro and more.

There will be pages as needed for each emulator and device that need it. You will still be able to find everything needed including the english translated BS-X with No-DRM patch. I will definitely look into ways to make this also more… legal. As if Satellaview preservation can even truly be that way.

Future

This website will also try to be informative in some way, similar to how 64dd.org is doing. I may want to make articles that would be easier to find than on SatellaBlog, but also… I do have a something planned in the near future that will show a basic idea of the gold standard I want to set… Stay tuned.

I hope this time I won’t leave the website completely unchecked for almost 10 years again without something actually worthwhile.
